Being a social media strategist and blogger I spend A LOT of time online searching for content for my clients. Here’s a secret: Twitter is an amazing tool for searches on any topic. Believe me on “any” topic because, as with Google, I sometimes come across things I would rather not see. As a result I have improved how I search on Twitter. Hashtags are an effective tool for research as well as targeted tweeting or tweeting to a specific audience.
What is a Twitter hashtag? Twitter defines hashtags as, “the # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.” Hashtags are a way to search terms within Twitter. For example, #jobseeker or #career are common for those in career transition.
How are #hashtags used? Hashtags are used by business owners, large corporations and folks like you and me. When tweeting a deal of the day, for example, it is common to add the hashtag #deal or #coupon. To identify your tweet locally you may add the city like #Phoenix or #NYC. As a tweep (Twitter peep or people) hashtags are an effective means of identifying topics of interest such as #entrepreneur or #marketing.
