Remember to Feed the Unicorn

Remember to Feed the Unicorn

[Picture from my pal Mary P.. I promised her months ago I would write a blog post for her picture. ]

Last week was an amazingly productive and stressful week. I took yesterday afternoon off and slept 12 hours last night and am feeling refreshed. I woke this morning and posted my personal Facebook status as:

My enlightenment while stepped away from the computer yesterday: Self-esteem comes from within not from others. You’re awesome because YOU are awesome not because someone else tells you it is so. Chew on that, peeps.

This came to me as I reflected on the happenings both personal and professional from last week. As I edited and wrote for a client on the topic of unconditional love I realized we can love someone unconditionally and not like or have to be friends with them. Unconditional love comes from the giver and not the receiver.

Just as the unicorn has a pointed horn, so do we have points as people, friends and professionals. Loving a unicorn means loving from afar because let’s face it, that horn could really do a number on us if we got too close. While we know we need to remember to feed the unicorn, we also love it from afar and unconditionally. That means we love it regardless of condition.

That is what happened this week. I decided to love unconditionally. Sometimes things don’t work out as we want them to and that is okay…even if the other person doesn’t think it is okay.

When I was in high school my music teacher told me he tried to learn one new thing each day. Last week I discovered:

  • Self-esteem comes from within and not from what others tell us to be true.
  • You can love unconditionally…and from afar.
  • Know your limits. I can’t take on every project or client that comes my way. Everything isn’t my passion; here are ten topics we can’t help but love.

Here’s to you feeding the unicorn and learning something new today or this week…as long as your mind is open you’re on the right track!
