Observations and Musings: Can I lay my head on you?

In life there are times when we need the trust of a confidante. We have secrets to tell or ideas to share and it is at those times that we call a meeting of our inner circle. I call these folks my power team. I also call them friends because sometimes business is best over beer with a side of laughter. On the way home from my recent roadtrip I selected a seat in the emergency row of the plane.

As a member of the emergency row it was my responsibility (and that of a half dozen others) to speak English and read the emergency procedure pamphlet and act in case of emergency. The legroom on the flight to Arizona made up for the lack of any personal space on the flight to New York two weeks earlier.

The responsibility of the row made up for the wack-a-doodle sitting next to me. She asked, with a straight face, if she could lean her head on me because she was uncomfortable.  I politely declined and got the distinct feeling I was on an episode of Candid Camera or Seinfeld. I wanted to tell her she could lay on the expansive floor in front of her uncomfortable seat until there was an emergency.

Life is as weird as that wack-a-doodle. It isn’t about what happens to us but how we react to what happens to us. Let’s face it – the bumper sticker is right – shit really does happen. Whether personally or in business we’re going to lose our personal space or be uncomfortable or be asked weird questions.

As I attempted to stay away from the leaning tower of wack-a-doodle, I reflected on my business and made some decisions. My business is just that – it’s mine. When it seems to have a mind of its own I need to realize I can reel things back. To that end I have decided to focus and be more diligent during my work days. Yes, I established work days and times and keep a schedule and daily to do list. I am currently five minutes into overtime…and closing down after a productive day.

  1. I have flown a lot over the past 14 years and while this hasn’t happened to me (yet) I have other stories of wack-a-doodle. Some people just get their switched turned off on flights!
