Phoenix to Newark Five Days After Sandy: @CoryBooker Can You Hear Me?

This week Super Storm Sandy brought a new dimension to my obsession with social media, storm watching and news from the New York area. She was set to pack a punch to some of my favorite people and places in the Northeast. On Monday, hours before Sandy raged, my uncle in New Jersey lost his battle with pancreatic cancer.

As if I wasn’t obsessed with the storm enough already I now watched travel advisories. The plan was to travel with my aunt and uncle from Arizona to Newark for the funeral. I, of course, became obsessed with Newark.

I followed the storm via social media and The Weather Channel from my couch in Arizona. When Sandy followed the Euro* model I was relieved that my home state of Connecticut wasn’t bearing the brunt of the storm as the American model was showing. Whichever course the storm took it wasn’t good news for my New Jersey family.

Travelling to Newark or anywhere in the Northeast this week seemed impossible so I searched Newark on Twitter for the latest news. I found @CoryBooker the Mayor of Newark tweeting and responding to people in need of help.

Not wanting to interfere with the work that needed so desperately to be done, I have been watching Super Mayor tweeting phone numbers, deliver supplies and let his neighbors into his house for electricity and heat. Amazing testament to what we can be for each other and to our community.

If you’re listening @CoryBooker, I just want to say THANK YOU!

As soon as this posts to the blog I will be heading to the airport. Now to obsess about that Nor’easter I hear is on its way…

*Knowing there’s a Euro model is the sign of a true weather geek. Just ask @JimCantore. By the way, I wonder if he saw my tweet that I have a crush on him.
